Why It Matters

Protects and expands one of Austin’s last artist-run cultural hubs, provides long-term affordable studios and rehearsal spaces for artists, increases access through ADA upgrades and inclusive design, anchors the newly designated Govalle Cultural District, strengthening East Austin’s cultural identity and ensuring sustained investment in the arts.
Since 2012, MoHA has provided radically affordable studios, event space, and support for thousands of artists in Austin. Programs include paid residencies, workshops, grant-writing support, and fiscal sponsorship. In 2023 alone, MoHA’s grant workshops helped artists secure $1.4 million, with 80% going to first-time applicants.

With $2.5 million in City bond funding and a $6 million project plan, MoHA is expanding its capacity and securing long-term sustainability. Renovations will make the space ADA-accessible, add studios, and create outdoor gathering areas. The finished facility will remain affordable, inclusive, and community-driven, ensuring Austin’s artists have a place to create and thrive.
