Why It Matters

Potential to unlock 57 acres in South Austin for community benefit, creates opportunities for affordable housing, civic, and cultural uses, ensures AISD land decisions are guided by student, family, and neighborhood voices, builds long-term financial resilience for AISD and the community.
The Toney Burger Athletic Center is one of AISD’s largest land assets. Located in Sunset Valley, the 57-acre site has served generations of Austin families. Now, through a partnership with Rally Austin, AISD is launching a needs assessment to explore how this land can potentially serve both educational and community goals for decades to come.

The planning process will engage families, students, neighbors, and local leaders to imagine future possibilities. By analyzing market trends, land use, and zoning, the project will identify scenarios for redevelopment. These options could include housing, civic space, or cultural facilities, alongside AISD needs. The result will be a set of community-informed strategies for AISD to consider when long-term planning.
